This book was about 200 pages longer than it should have been. I enjoyed the beginning but had a hard time slogging my way through the minutiae of their lives that filled the core of this book. When I FINALLY made it to the last few chapters I had to keep wiping my eyes on the bed sheets. I wish I could have been that connected all the way through. This book was definitely written more like a screenplay than a novel with many parallels to Iris Dart's "Beaches." I started reading this book a couple of years ago, put it down and while recently looking for something to read found myself picking it back up again. I didn't love this book and I probably would have given it a 2 except I found the writing captivating at points. With that said it's hard to pinpoint exactly what I didn't like. I'm always excited when I come across a book that is like nothing else I've ever read. This book is at once dark yet hauntingly beautiful and I couldn't put it down. It's a multifaceted and complex love story set amidst a depression era circus with everything that makes a great story - a villian, a heroine (not necessarily who you might expect) and a sprinkling of lovable characters in between. The biblical story of Jacob woven into the narrative was totally lost on me however, this is not surprising considering how biblically challenged I am.
