The Valley of Secrets by Charmian Hussey is a secret treasure of fascinating facts about the Amazon set within a novel about a teenage boy who embarks on a mysterious journey to Cornwall, England. Teenager Stephen Lansbury has lived his whole life in an orphanage believing that he had no family to speak of. One day, out of the blue, an odd letter arrives for him. The letter requests that he meet with lawyer, Albert Postlethwaite. To Stephen's amazement, he is informed that he has inherited a grand estate named Lansbury Hall, left to him by his great uncle, Theodore! He is shocked by the gift, but even more disturbing is the fact that he has family that knew about his existence. Stephen is at once thrilled and bewildered, scared and excited. Upon arriving at the estate, he is met with strange plants and animals and Stephen wonders about their origin. As the days wear on, and he becomes acquainted with the grounds and house, mysterious occurrences seem to be happening, not the least of which is a feeling that he is being watched and followed. To alleviate some of these fears, he takes advantage of the massive library and settles into a comfy chair to read. Stephen stumbles upon his great uncle's journals that ultimately reveal the reasons for the lush gardens and the unusual objects scattered throughout the house. In addition, he learns the truth about his family and the demise that fell upon them. But most importantly, he learns about his great uncle's journeys, loves, and family. A family that becomes Stephen's as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, not only for the fantastic journey it took me on, but also for the delight in the desciptions and stories of life in the Amazon. Theodore's journals take us back through time, to the early 20th century, when the Amazon was mysterious and glorious, but was in danger of being destroyed by greedy rubber barons who only saw profit in these forests of rich and beautiful wildlife. If you are a lover of animals, you will delight in the antics and intelligence of the playful animals that inhabit the grounds around the Lansbury estate. I found I had a hard time putting this book down, as I, too, 'traveled' with Stephen into Theodore's by-gone Amazon world....less

The strength and endurance of human survival instincts come barreling through this story set in Warsaw, Poland during Hitler's reign. A little boy knows only one thing: that he is small enough and quick enough to steal food to survive on his own. When Uri, an older boy, saves him from "The Jackboots" and takes him under his wing, we find out that this little boy doesn't know his name (he thinks it is 'stopthief'), doesn't know his age, and never knew his parents. He survives on the streets the only way he can, by stealing food, and finds comfort with other orphan boys in their hideouts. He is so naive, he doesn't understand what it means to be a Jew during the war. He needs to be taught what dangers lurk for him and others, and is desensitized to torture, poverty and the inhuman hatred for mankind. He befriends Janina, a little Jewish girl about his age. Eventually, the family 'adopts' him and they are all sent to the ghetto, where life is unbearable and barbaric, but it is the only life Misha (Janina's family has given him a name) knows. When Uri warns him to run, run, run because the trains are coming, he decides to stay with his adopted family instead. The trains do come, and as fate would have it, Janina and her family are forced on the train and go to the 'ovens'. Uri once again saves Misca's life, although in a roundabout way. Misha finds his way to America, but his memories haunt him and makes living a normal life nearly impossible. In the end, the love of Wendy Janina, his granddaughter, pulls him through and Misha finally sees joy through her eyes every time she spends time with him, her Poppynoodle. ...less

Lucy is newly divorced from Bradley Porter, a dull, unimaginative banker. When he stands her up at the divorce proceedings, that is just about the last straw. She is glad to be rid of him, especially after he'd been cheating on her with the blond who'd been in her house and bedroom recently. Lucy and her sister, Tina are commiserating over lunch, post-divorce proceedings, when all breaks loose. She is shot at, beats up a mugger and comes home to find that big ugly green chair that Bradley loved so much staring at her and mocking her in the living room. She is just about calmed down, when the 'mugger' appears at her door. Oops, not a mugger, but Detective Zach Warren. He is investigating an embezzlement case connected with Bradley. Not her Bradley Porter, but John Bradley a theif from California. Zach has a sixth sense and thinks the two Bradleys are somehow connected. He is determined to find out, while protecting Lucy...but somehow in all the chaos, Zach falls in love with Lucy and her dogs and this confirmed bachelor's life takes on a new direction. ...less

Aislinn can see faeries, the good and bad, although she doesn't know why. Grams has warned her, "don't stare at faeries, don't speak to the faeries, and don't attract their attention." Well, you know it wouldn't be much of a story if she actually listened to Grams...Keenan, the Summer King, wants and NEEDS her for his queen. If she becomes his queen, his power will be as strong as the evil Winter Queen, Beira. Beira just happens to be Keenan's mother. Aislinn wants nothing to do with Keenan or any of the other faeries. She is in love with Seth, a mortal. But, she agrees to meet with Keenan to try to figure out how to change all that seems to be unchangeably true. He tricks her, of sorts, into becoming a faery, and thus her lot is set. She will be Summer Queen when she accepts the staff from Donia, Keenan's true love, who once had hopes of ruling with him as the Summer Queen...Aislinn has some ideas of her own, is forceful and determined to have it all on her terms only, and agrees to this queen business with very specific concessions. ...less
