This was a fun bit of scifi. I think it could have been made into a longer book, to give more room for all of the scientists to actually do something, to expand on the ethnic and political factions, and to stretch the climax and ending to more than j ...more

It took me 2 and a half months to read this. -_-

It's a richly detailed story, and as a Chess nerd I wanted to love it. The mirrored adventures of Mireille and Catherine works great, especially once they're finally brought together. The overall plot i

This is super cute and super funny. Squirrel Girl's unbridled enthusiasm and general approach to conflict is great to watch, and the little inserts (like Deadpool's handy cards, or the "secret" text) work well with this series. I ate this volume like ...more

A really good read, this used multiple POVs, timeshifts, and metaphors in a really polished way.

I really like wizards and short stories, so this should have been right up my alley. Unfortunately, the quality of the stories in this anthology run the full range from 1 to 5 stars. I've already returned it to the library, or I'd rate each story ind ...more

I ended up really liking Da Shi, and the Panama Canal scene was fantastic. There was a lot more straight-up exposition than I'm used to, but it meshed well with the plot and didn't slow the pace much, so I let it slide.

William Shakespeare
“This rough magic
I here abjure, and, when I have required
Some heavenly music, which even now I do,
To work mine end upon their senses that
This airy charm is for, I'll break my staff,
Bury it certain fathoms in the earth,
And deeper than did ever plummet sound
I'll drown my book.”
William Shakespeare, The Tempest

John Green
“As the tide washed in, the Dutch Tulip Man faced the Ocean:
"Conjoiner rejoinder poisoner concealer revelator. Look at it, rising up and rising down, taking everything with it."

"What’s that?" Anna asked.

"Water," the Dutchman said. "Well, and time.”
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

Austin Grossman
“When you can't bear something but it goes on anyway, the person who survives isn't you anymore; you've changed and become someone else, a new person, the one who did bear it after all.”
Austin Grossman

Stephen Crane
In the Desert

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter—bitter,” he answered;

“But I like it
“Because it is bitter,
“And because it is my heart.”
Stephen Crane, The Black Riders and Other Lines

A Man Said to the Universe

A man said to the universe:
“Sir, I exist!”
“However,” replied the universe,
“The fact has not created in me
A sense of obligation.”
