'The Canterbury Tales' in space. Excellent writing and character development. It leaves you hanging at the end. But that's what "The Fall of Hyperion"--its follow-up--is for.

Based on events around the Trojan War but set in a contemporary gay urban setting, 'An Arrow's Flight' meanders between thoughtful insights into the human condition and smug satisfaction at its own cleverness. There were times when the mix of ancient Greek culture and contemporary gay culture were devastatingly funny and other moments when the device was just too cumbersome. The real value of the book was reading Merlis' tender and honest reflections on sex and love scattered throughout.

I was thoroughly drawn in by the concept of this book, that of people in modern times being possessed by archetypes from the collective unconscious. Society has no consensus on the reason for this phenomenon, and people debate both the cause and the cure. But a good concept will only take you so far. The author overindulged in pop culture references. And as more specifics of the plot were revealed, I found the book holding my attention less and less. It was a fun read nonetheless.

Reading 'Turn Coat' was a fun ride. It seemed to hold together better than the last couple of Harry Dresden releases. And while I suppose you could read this on its own, I think having a working knowledge of the earlier books in the series would really aid the reader's understanding and enjoyment.

A satisfying trashy sci fi read. Sure, there are too many characters to keep track of, and, yes, the plot was overly intricate. But if you like super heroes that act like human beings (sexual, jealous, ambivalent, ambitious, etc.), then this book is a fun read.

While I enjoyed visiting with the 'Tales of the City' crew again, this book started slow and ended on a rather weak note. But the middle--ah, the middle. I finally felt that the book was finding its stride. The old warmth and humor seemed to shine through. But it just wasn't the same.

If you like bleak with a side of despair, this is the book for you. I am no stranger to stories with harsh themes. But "The Road" started out bleak and stayed that way throughout. I enjoyed the austere prose, which aptly fit the post-apocalyptic setting. And yet, something seemed to be lacking. I don't always need resolution nor a happy ending in what I read. But for a book entitled "The Road," it ended up not going anywhere.
