This is exactly the type of story that should scare the crap out of me, since it truly typifies my worst nightmare. Let me just say that I finished this book while on the beach, and was crying and snotting all over myself. There are turns of phrase that McCarthy uses that are so incredible - one that I marked was "Borrowed time and borrowed world and borrowed eyes with which to sorrow it." Beautifully written and utterly gut-wrenching....less

I think I'm only 170 pages or so into this book, but I am in love with it! I am really enjoying the way the author tells a snippet of story about the 4 main characters coming together, and then takes you back into the history of each. A brief scene in the beginning: Ishvar, Om and Maneck meet on the train, and then discover they are all going to Dina Dilal's residence. After arriving at Dina's, she meets and treats each of them in a very specific manner (I won't go deeper so you can experience for yourself). But then, Dina's story from childhood to the present. And then another scene with Ishvar and Om where they behave in a way that I thought was questionable, but then their story from childhood to present. A Fine Balance indeed
I have finished this boo now, and it was incredible. What an amazing and beautifully written story. I highly recommend it....less

I wish I knew more about the Ukraine, but I have the feeling this book captures the isolation and loneliness that seems to permeate that section of the globe. While I definitely loved this book, it was both depressing and uplifting at turns. The special relationship that Viktor has with Misha is heartwarming, despite that their interactions seem limited.
By the way, I love the idea of a more poetic-style obituary... what a great idea! We should all have those....less

I just love Rushdie. Except with this one I have to say that perhaps a better knowledge of some of the legends and mythology he references might have been good so that I could draw more concrete parallels between the characters. I think I'll need to reread this one again, since I am certain that I am missing something here....less

I adored this book - I am excited to see the BBC version of it! I have to confess that it took me several chapters before I could get into the flow of Dickens' language and fully appreciate his turns of phrase and nuances. In fact, it took my mom pointing out the hilarity of his opening 2 page description of the thick London fog and comparing it to the cloud of fog around the Lord Chancellor's head! I went back and reread that passage and truly laughed out loud.
It was an interesting juxtaposition because I began this book on an 8 day trip to the Dominican Republic, where I managed to devour 400+ pages on the beach. Beautiful tropics around me, but cold Victorian fog or verdant English countryside swirling through my head.
My favorite books are those that are quite long and allow me to feel as though the cast of characters are friends of mine. Clearly a must read for anyone who is a fan of Dickens, or Victorian England....less
