These might have been tales from the darker side, but they really weren't dark tales. Typical L.M. Montgomery: country P.E. Island life from a century ago with an emphasis on good old fashioned romance. I generally prefer a long book to a collection of stories, but each of the tales was very easy to quickly get into.

For a Michael Connelly book it took a little longer than usual for me to get far enough into it to not put it down. And, it was clever, but not as much as I was expecting. It was suspenseful enough for me to have to flip ahead and I'm finally realizing that Michael Connelly books are less mystery and more suspense. I'm a bigger fan of the former.

To be fair, the book did seem to be well researched and well written. But, it was not quite what I expected and I did not enjoy reading it and it left me with a sour feeling. The book is about the horrible 72 Munich olympics massacre and Isreal's response (well, no surprise there, that's all in the title). But, I didn't realize that the Massacre probably could have been avoided or at least lessened if the host country had handled things differently. For just one example, one of the guys killed died of smoke inhalation while the firefighters stood by and did nothing, didn't even try to put out the fire. These were obviously not NY firefighters. Also, I expected the response to be that Israel would hunt down and kill the three guys who were directly involved who lived and were let go by West Germany and then Isreal would find out who was behind the attack and assisinate them too. But no, most of those guys are still living. Israel went after guys who were less involved in terrorism but easier to get to. And more than one person was killed who was totally and completely innocent but either in the wrong place at the wrong time or who was mistaken for someone else.
UGG all around. Well, one good thing about reading this book was that this was a book that my husband actually read also so we could talk about it. Although it was sort of a depressing talk.

The three stars is what I think of the book, not what I think of Oswald Chambers. It was a detailed book full of excerpts from Oswald's letters and covers where he was and what he was doing (and oftentimes what he thought) for most of his life, and yet I still don't feel like I really have a sense of his personality and I have more questions than before. The book was written far enough out that they could tell us what came of Chrissy Brain. Or, at the VERY least Kathleen.
I did like what he had to say about books:
"I do thank God for my books with every fibre of my being. Friends that are ever true and ever your own."
"They are beginning to call the life on board [the ship:] dull. My word! dull! with books and sea and mind and prayer, dull! It is teeming with endless and joyous interest."
I enjoyed it well enough. For the most part. For a fantasy book that had a lot going on, it was actually sort of slow to me. I never wanted to put it down, but I never was really excited to pick it back up. And I could have done without the commentary. The author's main character makes comments about how war in real life is so horrible/political/unnecessary and then the main character goes to the fantasy land and is forever fighting. But I suppose it's all OK because when he fights he fights to maim not to kill and he feels bad when he does end up killing someone. Give me a break. Just fight the fights however you want to fight them and stop talking about it.
