I'm intrigued by your review. I wonder if you read A Thousand Splendid Suns, which though fiction, left me with some of the same themes you discussed from Infidel. Another thing you talk about - the notion of freedom, leads me to share what an interesting woman I met last year told me. She's from Zaire - I was making smalltalk at a dinner party, and asked her how she wound up in Bham. She said, "I dreamed of coming to Birmingham. In my country, we see Birmingham as a place where the people stood up and took their place. They are heroes to us, and people listened to them. So I wanted to live in Birmingham. It is my dream. Many people in Zaire share this dream."

I was blown away. Birmingham? But her perspective, growing up in such oppression, made her aspire to be a black woman here. Damn, we don't see the world like other folks do. "American by birth, southern by the grace o' god..."

You read a lot more non-fiction than I do; I'm jealous. Wish I had a better head for it. ]]>
