I was far more excited by the concept and promise of this novel than what it provided, over and over again. I never completed the novel, seeing how it's with Emily again, but I read most of the book and enough to get a good sense of why the man's ideas, great for his time, come off a bit flat now. In an age where we've managed to maintain a fair attention span in the face of mounting (information) speed, Toffler's worries are somewhat laughable. That isn't to say, however, that his idea of future shock is not around the corner - it very well might be. But, certainly the early 21st century is a bit early.

Given to me by my doctor father who heard from another doctor father that this was the thing to give to the budding doctor children. This is a nonfiction narrative about a foreigner (Indian born in Ethiopia living in rural Tennessee treating AIDS in mostly gay patients) dealing with being an outsider in almost every aspect of his live. His dedication to his newfound cohort (this was 1983, around the time AIDS was cropping up in SF, NYC, DC in large numbers, stemming from patient 0 - gaetan dugas) begins a long and slow deterioration in his marriage, his confidence in himself and his chosen path, and his place in the community. I think I was given this book as a demonstration of compassion and principle in the face of adversity and moral injustice. Fair enough.
