The idea is that a book is going to be in one of those states at any given time. The other shelves are added to whatever exclusive shelf the book is on. So, if you have Kids Books as a shelf you could have one you've already read on Read and Kids Books. Each book can pretty much be on as many shelves as you want; it's not either/or.

Thanks for the clear explanation of the concept. Though I think that concept is wrong. I SHOULD be able to MOVE books between shelves. 'Exclusive' shelves are thus nonsense in my estimation. However, that said, I AM thankful for GoodReads and will accept its limitations.
