While I thoroughly enjoyed "The Secret History," I found that the novel had a few infelicities that "The Little Friend" largely rectified. The book starts off stunningly well; the prologue grabs you, and Book I was beautifully written. However, I felt the promise that Tartt built in Book I for where the novel might go largely fell into cliche and banal tropes of television thrillers. The Epilogue, too, with its "what happens to all the characters" recap was unnecessary and amateurish. As my first book by Iris Murdoch, I approached this book with high expectations in terms of style, story, character, and intellectual fortitude. Murdoch does not disappoint, and instead crafts a story with shifting points of view, morphing relationships, and surprising characters. While several of them take a rather unprecedented interest in philosophy which leads to some didactic passages, what else are we to expect from a philosophy don turned novelist? In all, I was entertained by this book and felt edified at its closed.
