The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne

Hawthorne is a very pleasant read, though he is subject to the pace of another age that sometimes tried my patience. He was a writer that improved me for reading him, and I liked the thought within this. Dreadfully clever and cheeky at times, too.
