Whenever I read books of this nature it always makes me want to load up my backpack and head out on another little adventure of my own. But Krakauer's in-depth exploration of the theories and events surrounding the death of Chris McCandless affected me in a totally different way. At times it gave me goose bumps and I would have to reread a paragraph, page or even chapter because I would get so deep in thought that I'd forget what I'd read.

McCandless' tale had an all too familiar ring and it made me take a closer look at all of my own near misses...all the risks I've taken whilst hiking over mountains or climbing up the faces of waterfalls just to get that rush of andrenaline that makes you feel alive. It urges you to question just how far you will go to get that feeling and whether or not the risks are worth the rewards.
