It's not like Anne Rice's books have ever been great literature, but they always seemed to go in hills and valleys; a readable book, a terrible book, two readable books, three terrible ones and so on. The prequel to this was actually quite readable. Lestat returned as a "main character" and the plot moved briskly. The secondary characters were fleshed out, and all in all it wasn't a terrible book.

This book, however, took all the promise out of the previous and replaced it with unfiltered literary sewage. This is probably the worst of the Vampire books, beating out Queen of the Damned for sheer nonsense. The world-building is gone, the characters are bland (or plain stupid.
