I just finished reading this book and if you want to learn about one of the most influential journalists of the early 20th century this is a great place to start. Mencken was a consistent defender of freedom of speech and particularly the freedom (and responsibility) of the press to question the actions of those in power. He was constantly a gadfly to the media inciting them to be skeptical of the motives of our leaders. Quite an interesting man. He was constantly a gadfly to the media inciting them to be skeptical of the motives of our leaders. Quite an interesting man. This book was written well enough that it did not bog down. I never felt like I was slogging through it just to get it done. It was interesting to see history swirl around this man.

I just read Alas, Babylon for the second time and I liked it even more the second time around. It is the story of a small town in Florida and what happens to them after a nuclear holocaust. Too many of the post-apocalyptic authors make these scenarios into a purely anarcho-hedonistic society, but Pat Frank (pseudonym for journalist Harry Hart) wrote this in the 50's when nuclear annihilation was a real concern and he shows an underlying faith in humanity's ability to fight for the things that define civilization. It is an easy read. It took me about two days and I have added it to my Personal Classics list.

Victor Hugo wrote one of the most important novels portraying the life-changing power of faith. A simple priest's faith in Jean Valjean changed a time-hardened criminal into a man who sought a life of faithfulness. This is one of my favorite stories of redemption. I have to be honest though, the parts of the book that relate French history bog it down for me and I tend to skip those parts. The contrast between Valjean and Javert, a contrast of mercy and justice, is also striking. Javert is a tragic character and my heart has always gone out to him and each time I read it I find myself hoping that he can see the value and reality of mercy. A phenomenal book.

I read this book because my wife and children had read it and liked it and I loved it. It is such a great moral story about the value of persistence in getting an education and fulfilling your purpose. I highly recommend it, particularly as a read-aloud with your children.

This is a recollection by Ralph Moody of his childhood with his family working to scratch out a living on a new farm in Colorado. So many great lessons come from Ralph's father. This is a read-aloud book with the family.
