She was such a perfect angel that she actually fell into a dead swoon after having t...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/I%20enjoyed%20this%20book,%20but%20found%20Margaret%20insufferable%20for%20several%20reasons.%0D%0A%0D%0A1.%20She%20spent%20way%20too%20much%20time%20obsessing%20about%20the%20lie%20she%20had%20to%20tell%20when%20the%20policeman%20asked%20her%20if%20she'd%20been%20at%20the%20station.%20%20She%20was%20such%20a%20perfect%20angel%20that%20she%20actually%20fell%20into%20a%20dead%20swoon%20after%20having%20to%20tell%20such%20a%20deliberate%20untruth,%20and%20then%20spent%20the%20entire%20rest%20of%20the%20novel%20beating%20herself%20up%20over%20it.%20%20%0D%0A%0D%0A2.%20I%20didn't%20understand%20why%20she%20thought%20it%20was%20so%20imperative%20NOT%20to%20explain%20to%20Mr%20Thornton%20about%20the%20whole%20Frederick%2Flie%20incident.%20%20After%20she'd%20found%20out%20Frederick%20was%20safe,%20when%20Thornton%20asked%20her%20about%20it%20again,%20it%20would've%20made%20perfect%20sense%20to%20give%20him%20a%20brief%20explanation.%20%20If%20she%20really%20thought%20Thornton%20was%20so%20indiscreet%20that%20telling%20him%20about%20Fred%20would%20put%20Fred%20in%20danger,%20she%20obviously%20didn't%20know%20Thornton%20at%20all.%20%20The%20only%20other%20reason%20I%20can%20think%20of%20for%20not%20telling%20him%20is%20%22pride%22,%20which%20is%20NOT%20a%20good%20enough%20reason%20to%20ruin%20your%20own%20life,%20despite%20what%20most%20turn-of-the-century%20heroines%20seem%20to%20believe.%20%0D%0A%0D%0A3.%20She%20never%20asked%20her%20father%20for%20details%20about%20his%20big%20religious%20problem,%20the%20one%20that%20was%20so%20vital%20he%20felt%20obliged%20to%20uproot%20his%20family%20and%20endanger%20his%20wife's%20health%20and%20make%20everyone%20miserable.%20%20She%20was%20obviously%20an%20intelligent%20woman%20with%20informed%20opinions%20and%20a%20strong%20will%20of%20her%20own.%20%20Wasn't%20she%20even%20a%20little%20bit%20curious%3F%20%20I%20know%20that%20as%20a%20woman%20of%20that%20era,%20unquestioning%20obedience%20to%20the%20father%20of%20the%20house%20was%20the%20done%20thing.%20%20But%20I%20couldn't%20help%20feeling%20like%20it%20went%20against%20her%20character,%20as%20described%20in%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20book,%20not%20to%20at%20least%20ask%20him%20for%20an%20explanation.%0D%0A%0D%0A4.%20In%20general%20she%20was%20a%20bit%20too%20sickeningly%20good%20and%20perfect%20and%20unselfish%20and%20beautiful%20for%20my%20taste.%20%20I%20like%20a%20heroine%20with%20a%20few%20faults.%20%20%0D%0A%0D%0AJohn%20Thornton,%20on%20the%20other%20hand,%20was%20fantastic.%20%20I%20loved%20how%20much%20of%20his%20thought%20process%20was%20included%20-%20his%20struggles%20to%20come%20to%20grips%20with%20the%20fact%20that%20he%20was%20agonizingly%20in%20love%20with%20a%20woman%20who%20couldn't%20care%20less%20about%20him,%20the%20mental%20efforts%20he%20went%20through%20to%20find%20excuses%20for%20Margaret%20when%20circumstantial%20evidence%20was%20so%20clearly%20against%20her,%20his%20frustration%20and%20passion%20and%20intensity.%20%20Made%20it%20all%20the%20more%20satisfying%20when%20they%20eventually%20did%20get%20together%20(although%20nothing%20could%20live%20up%20to%20that%20marvellous%20kissing%20scene%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20BBC%20series).%20%20Of%20course,%20he%20didn't%20have%20much%20of%20a%20sense%20of%20humour...%20but%20if%20he%20had%20it%20would've%20ruined%20the%20whole%20'tortured,%20brooding%20hero'%20thing%20he%20had%20going%20on%20so%20perhaps%20it%20was%20all%20for%20the%20best.%20%20In%20any%20case%20Margaret%20didn't%20have%20one%20either,%20so%20they%20were%20well%20suited.%20%20%0D%0A%0D%0AMy%20only%20other%20complaint%20was%20that%20the%20ending%20was%20terribly%20long%20and%20drawn%20out%20-%20endless%20dreary%20scenes%20of%20Margaret%20in%20London%20pining%20away%20in%20misery%20for%20a%20whole%20year,%20and%20then%20suddenly%20it%20finished%20up%20lickety%20split%20and%20only%20spent%20about%20a%20paragraph%20on%20the%20reunited%20lovers%20happy%20at%20last.%20%20I%20felt%20a%20bit%20cheated.">more...</a>]]></body>

          <body><![CDATA[Yes the Darkfall trilogy is his favourite, he made me read it and I didn't like it so never searched out any of her other books!  And it's so true about the invented worlds, Tom has this other book he loves called Bloom and he's always going on about the cool concepts &amp; awesome technology they have in that universe, but when I read it I found the LONG descriptions of exactly how they worked extremely boring.  I think you need to have a scientific mind to enjoy science fiction, and I totally don't.]]></body>

          <body><![CDATA[I've revised my opinion of this book (or should I say these books?) after a second reading, so instead of editing my old review I shall write another here.<br/><br/>I enjoyed it much more than I did the first time!  Actually I couldn't remember reading Court Duel at all previously, only Crown Duel...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/I've%20revised%20my%20opinion%20of%20this%20book%20(or%20should%20I%20say%20these%20books%3F)%20after%20a%20second%20reading,%20so%20instead%20of%20editing%20my%20old%20review%20I%20shall%20write%20another%20here.%0D%0A%0D%0AI%20enjoyed%20it%20much%20more%20than%20I%20did%20the%20first%20time!%20%20Actually%20I%20couldn't%20remember%20reading%20Court%20Duel%20at%20all%20previously,%20only%20Crown%20Duel,%20so%20unless%20I%20have%20a%20very%20short%20memory%20I%20must%20not%20have%20read%20the%20second%20part%2Fnovel%20very%20attentively.%20%20But%20anyway...%20%0D%0A%0D%0AI%20thought%20Shevraeth%20was%20great,%20very%20clever%20and%20mysterious%20and%20suave.%20%20I%20do%20like%20a%20drawling%20hero!%20%20Although%20I%20wasn't%20a%20fan%20of%20his%20'pale%20blonde'%20hair%20which%20kept%20reminding%20me%20of%20Malfoy.%20%20Mel%20was%20good%20too%20-%20she%20actually%20had%20some%20faults,%20which%20I%20liked,%20and%20she%20didn't%20always%20outwit%20the%20baddies%20or%20escape%20capture%20too%20conveniently.%20%20She%20was%20a%20LITTLE%20bit%20dense%20regarding%20Shevraeth%20and%20his%20feelings%20for%20her%20-%20I%20mean%20come%20ON%20woman,%20why%20ELSE%20would%20he%20ask%20for%20a%20kiss%20as%20a%20wager,%20hmm%3F%3F%20%20And%20her%20'knee-length'%20hair%20got%20on%20my%20nerves%20a%20bit%20for%20some%20reason,%20but%20other%20than%20that%20I%20thought%20she%20was%20a%20good%20strong%20independant%20female%20character%20for%20all%20the%20feminists%20to%20rejoice%20over.%20%20%0D%0A%0D%0AThere%20were%20some%20really%20original%20ideas%20in%20this,%20the%20colourwood%20trees%20and%20the%20Hill%20Folk,%20and%20the%20way%20the%20different%20hours%20of%20the%20day%20were%20referred%20to%20as%20'blue'%20and%20'gold'%20etc.%20%20I%20liked%20the%20way%20the%20magic%20in%20it%20was%20just%20sort%20of%20incidental%20-%20oh,%20by%20the%20way,%20my%20cloak%20was%20enchanted%20by%20a%20mage%20to%20resist%20rain.%20%20And%20I%20really%20enjoyed%20all%20the%20court%20intrigue%20with%20the%20fans%20and%20dresses%20and%20secret%20letters%20etc.%20%20There%20was%20a%20bit%20of%20politics,%20unavoidably,%20but%20I%20thought%20S.Smith%20did%20a%20good%20job%20of%20not%20getting%20too%20bogged%20down%20in%20it%20and%20I%20actually%20managed%20to%20follow%20along%20with%20all%20the%20plots%20and%20conspiracies%20pretty%20well%20I%20thought!%20%20My%20only%20beef%20with%20the%20author%20was%20that%20she%20used%20%22...then%20I%20fell%20unconscious.%20%20Next%20thing%20I%20knew%20I%20was%20tucked%20up%20in%20bed%20with%20a%20cup%20of%20hot%20tea%22%20a%20few%20too%20many%20times%20as%20a%20scene-changing%20device%20in%20Crown%20Duel.%0D%0A%0D%0AI%20kept%20reading%20Branaric%20and%20Meliara%20as%20Brainiac%20and%20Malaria,%20and%20thought%20others%20had%20names%20which%20were%20a%20bit%20MUCH%20(I'm%20glaring%20at%20YOU,%20VIDANRIC%20SHEVRAETH).%20%20Attention%20fantasy%20writers%20of%20the%20world:%20look%20into%20simple%20names%20like%20Ted%20and%20Alice!%20%20The%20world%20will%20thank%20you!%20%20%0D%0A%0D%0AFinally:%20despite%20warnings%20to%20the%20contrary%20I%20couldn't%20resist%20reading%20'Vidanric's%20Birthday%20Surprise'%20-%20ha%20ha!%20%20It%20wasn't%20THAT%20bad.">more...</a>]]></body>
