<about>I was realizing the other day that while my post-college friends/coworkers/associates actually don't realize that I'm a total bookworm. I mean, they know I read, but they don't understand the *depth.*

Honest truth: when I was in junior high, the teacher held a read-a-thon for the seventh and eighth graders. Records were kept over who had read the most books in the two years. When I discovered this contest (in sixth grade), there was no question in my mind that I'd win the contest for my class…and break the current record. In the early weeks of seventh grade, it became clear to the others as well. But no one understood the extent of my competitiveness – I had already decided that I was going to break the old two-year record by the end of my first year.

And I did.

Somehow, I assume that when people look at me, they can still see the seventh grader who set the reading record (which still stands, 14 years later).

Probably it's a good thing they can't.</about>
