A fascinating and original premise for a novel. I loved its set-up, and the exploration of a new world outside the village of Prentisstown. In a way, it followed many of the tropes of a more traditional fantasy novel, but in a far more original context. And as the pace builds relentlessly, it becomes a true page-turner.

However, I also felt that the final "act" let it down slightly, and opted for a bit of a forced cliche of an ending. However, having now read the sequel, I'm glad it ended at the cliffhanger where it did.

Following on from the cliffhanger ending of "The Knife of Never Letting Go", this book follows what happens next in the town formally known as Haven, but now New Prentisstown. Now-President Prentiss has declared himself ruler of a town conquered, and claims to want peace, but Todd has his doubts. As the townsfolk become divided, Todd and Viola find themselves separated, and need to decide where their allegiance lies as tensions rise.

I actually liked this book more than the first - now that the universe was established, it's a chance to explore characters a lot more. Plus the preacher in the first book annoyed me as being somewhat 2-dimensional, whereas the villains in this book are far more ambiguous and intriguing.

And whereas the last book frustrated me with its cliffhanger, this book has me anxious to see the series' conclusion. Soon, please??

A wonderfully intriguing novel for middle readers. Ted is a 12 year old high-functioning autistic boy, with a keen fascination of meteorology. When his cousin, Salim, seemingly disappears after stepping onto the London Eye, never to disembark at the other end, Ted is determined to solve this mystery.

The narrative is simple, yet brutally honest, heartwarming, and tragic. It reminds us that sometimes the clearest solutions are sitting right in front of us, or waiting around the corner, and all we need to do is watch, listen and think, rather than be blinded by judgement.

A wonderful read.
