Celibate in Sillicon Valley is one of the worst books I've read. I disliked every single character. I found the main character to be a bitter, overweight, self absorbed, prude. I really don't know what "award" Kristin Billerbeck has won but she must have been the only writer in the contest or she must have won this "award" in third grade because her writing lacks any imagination or depth.
As a Christian I especially found the racist undertones appalling. ]]>

It is nearly impossible for me to give a collection of short stories 5 stars. Out of the thirteen stories, I would give them a range of 3 to 5+ stars.
The first two stories "A Fable Ending in the Sound of Thousand Parakeets" and "The View from the Seventh Layer" were deliciously written. It was like being at a museum or art gallery where you are walking by each piece when suddenly something so inspiring forces you to sit down for a moment and soak it in. If crafting a short story is an art; Kevin Brockmeier is a master. He is a writer for writers. It might feel like a contradiction, but he has a lyrical way of weaving the fantastic with the mundane. ]]>

It was a fair attempt at first novel from the spawn of Steven King. I did enjoy the solid horror/ghost story premise and our two main characters. It was refreshing to have an over-the-Hill rocker and his pole dancing girlfriend as our deeply flawed heroes. Over all I wouldn't recommend it to many people. However, it did fit the bill for my Halloween themed October book-fest. ]]>

That's how I felt. I was at the Library returning a book and went to the for sale section and I picked up her Mary Magdeline book for $1.50 I love the Burbank Library. (haven't read it yet) ]]>
