This was more of a three and a half stars rather than a four stars book, but I don't mind giving it more for sheer readability. This was my first Michael Koryta book and, while I wasn't necessarily blown away, it definitely won't be the last. Koryta ...more

This was a solid entry as the first book of what's supposed to be a trilogy. The story was well-told and the pacing was well-done. The 500 pages went quickly, especially after the first third. I will say that this is Harkness' first book, and it show...more

If I could, I would give this book four and a half stars. Although, I don't think it was perfect, it was pretty close! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Ms. Goodman is an excellent writer, and this was a nicely-told bildungsroman for twenty-somethings. Recomm...more

Cornelia Funke
“Isn't it odd how much fatter a book gets when you've read it several times?" Mo had said..."As if something were left between the pages every time you read it. Feelings, thoughts, sounds, smells...and then, when you look at the book again many years later, you find yourself there, too, a slightly younger self, slightly different, as if the book had preserved you like a pressed flower...both strange and familiar.”
Cornelia Funke, Inkspell

“And so it has taken me all of sixty years to understand that water is the finest drink, and bread the most delicious food. and that art is worthless unless it plants a measure of splendor in people's hearts.”
Taha Muhammad Ali

James Baldwin
“You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who had ever been alive.”
James Baldwin

Joyce Carol Oates
“Fiction that adds up, that suggests a "logical consistency," or an explanation of some kind, is surely second-rate fiction; for the truth of life is its mystery.”
Joyce Carol Oates, The Journal of Joyce Carol Oates: 1973-1982

Pat Conroy
“You get a little moody sometimes but I think that's because you like to read. People that like to read are always a little fucked up.”
Pat Conroy, The Prince of Tides
