I came to the same conclusion myself recently about why I generally don't enjoy short stories. And then I realized I feel the same way about episodic television dramas! I really need there to be multi-episode arcs, if not series-long plots. I read the first 200 pages or so on a plane a few years ago, but never got around to picking it back up. Then the other day I decided to pick it up, and had next to no memory of what I'd read, so I started over from the beginning. I'm finding it less dense and an easier read than I remembered, but I still don't remember much of any of the characters or plot. There's a lot to like here---layers of fantasy interwoven and echoing off each other---but I felt a bit let down after finishing. That is, the ending was fine, but there were several threads that didn't get resolved very well (or at all). Also, I can't help but feel like the "coma dream" structure is a bit hackneyed, even if this did predate the ones I'm most familiar with (Sopranos and Life on Mars). It was kind of a nice surprise to see pop culture references in an Iain Banks book, but it also really dated the book, and I had a hard time truly empathizing with a mid-eighties yuppie.
