This book is not a fairy tale. Its an unblinking account of all the aspects of our lives we choose not to see. Because it is truthful, it is beautiful. If truth isn't your thing, read The Alchemist. I happened to finish The Alchemist right before starting this book, and they make excellent companions. The Alchemist tells you that if you pursue your life's purpose, the universe will open every door. This book reminds you of the people who built the door, the people who assembled the hinges, the people who shipped the door, the people who stood behind the cash register as you paid for the door; oh, those many people not pursuing their life's purpose as they drive each day to their workplace. Bless them all.

It is the most recent, maybe last book about Roth's protagonist Nathan Zuckerman who the public probably thinks is Roth's alter-ego.

I loved this book. Maybe it was a man's book. It certainly deals with some issues unique to men -- prostrate cancer, for example. But it also is about aging, about our bodies betraying us over time, about changes, about decisions made without much thoughts which can turn out to have enormous significance in people's lives.

Loved the book. Now I'm going to go back and get all the books about this character, start from the beginning.(less)

This story reads like a classic horror Edgar Allen Poe horror story. It begs to be read aloud to kids 6 and up.
