I was immediately immersed in this story, billed as "the classic tale of romantic suspense" on the cover. I love du Maurier's writing, at once direct and lyrical. I could identify with Mrs. de Winter in her solicitude and her naivete. All the characters were so fully realized that it wasn't until I was trying to describe the book to my hubby that I became aware that Mrs. de Winter has no first name. I hadn't even noticed because, with the story being told from her point of view, I felt like I knew her, I understood her. What a great read, and a classic to boot!

I'm hopeless at writing book reviews. Completely hopeless. Can't do it to save my life. I usually end giving too much detail in the summary and then stumble through a dissection of the theme. What a way to butcher a book. And with a book as great as Les Misérables, I doubt I could really do it justice. Even with multiple edits and revisions. Besides, I probably can't say anything about the book itself that hasn't already been said before, so I'll offer some personal reflections instead. Hopefully that works. And here we go!

When I was about halfway through Les Mis, I came across an abridged version in a local bookstore. My copy, unabridged, is 1,463 pages. The abridged copy? Less than 500. Huh? I was shocked. Even though I could tell, from my reading, that it was entirely possible to cut out nearly a thousand pages, I still read the entire freakin' book.

And so should you! Because any publisher worth his weight, and any reader worth his spit, should know that this is not "Jean Valjean Goes to Paris." This is not a jolly little story about a guy who has a handful of adventures after he gets out of jail. This is Les Misérables--Les Freakin' Misérables, a title that cannot be translated into a wimpy language like English without looking incredibly stupid--and if you want the abridged version, go see the damn musical. Which is amazing, by the way.

But whether you've seen the musical or not, if you want to read the book, you will not read the abridged version. Don't you dare. Don't even think the word "abridged." Yeah, I know, Victor Hugo frequently turns away from the main narrative to focus on side characters, historical events, religion, philosophy, and other subjects. That's why this isn't called "Jean Valjean's Excellent Adventure." Victor Hugo had more than a story to tell--he had an entire world. To cut all that out, so you just have the barest amount of the original story--you have the Wishbone version. Which is probably pretty good, actually, if it exists, so I'll start again. Take out those thousand pages of subplots and side stories, and you have--well, I can't even imagine what that's like.

Yes, I'll confess, my eyes occasionally glazed over during some of Hugo's lengthier side narratives. Yeah, I started to get a bit frustrated when, about 800 pages in, Hugo was still introducing characters (the middle part, that great hump in which we meet Marius is the hardest part to get through, but after all, it was the halfway point, and Marius wasn't exactly my favorite character). And, I'll admit, I got a bit frustrated during my final 2-day, 400-page marathon for the end when, during the more exciting parts of the story, Hugo took a step back from the barricades and the escapes and the recovery to focus on, say, the history of the Paris sewers.

But despite all that, I loved the entire thing. I couldn't help myself. This fantastic novel was never intended to be a thrilling action book. If I wanted to read something quick and exciting, I would grab any one of those grocery store books with a two-week shelf life. But Les Mis isn't a couple of cliffhangers and a cookie-cutter ending. It's more than that. This (here's where the attempt at legitimate review via multiple edits and revisions comes in) is a story about people trying to reconcile their beliefs in spiritual redemption offered by a loving God with their futile aattempts to find redemption in a rigid and unyielding world that neither forgives nor forgets. Hell, this is a story about Humanity in all its glory and ugliness. And to paraphrase a certain Monsieur T, I pity the fool who thinks he can get all that in the abridged version. 500 pages? Dubya-tee-eff?

I knew, when I picked this one up, that I wanted to read something big, lengthy, and dense. I knew it would be a challenge to finish in a reasonable time, but I wasn't worried. I had plenty of free time, wanted to lose myself in a good book, and Les Mis seemed the perfect book for the occasion. And I gotta say, I was right.

And now, on to War and Peace!
(less)

The Road To Forever by Ron Felt is an intriguing mystery/thriller/psychological suspense novel with well-developed characters and a fast-paced story. Once I picked it up, I found that I couldn't put it down, finishing it the same day I started it.

Felt tells the story of a ruthless serial killer who gets his thrills from watching the life flee from his victims' eyes as he's killing them. Jackson, the head detective assigned to this case, is training Edwards, an over-eager rookie who still has a lot to learn. While taking in the crime scene, Jackson can "see" through the eyes of the killer, getting a good idea of how the crime played out; but this killer is intelligent, leaving very little evidence for the detectives to go on. Meanwhile, the killer is growing increasingly more needy and must satisfy his urge to kill quicker and quicker after each new victim. The plot speeds along to a surprise ending.

The thing I liked most about this book was that Felt took the time to really develop his characters--all of them. We get to delve into the mind of the serial killer himself, learning about the path that led him to this brutal lifestyle. We also learn about the detectives, Edwards and Jackson, and the experiences in their past that make them who they are today.

Felt is a Goodreads author currently writing his second novel, a sequel to The Road to Forever. I love finding new authors who write well!

I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good thriller and a quick read. Most chapters are fairly short, so you can always find a good stopping place...but I don't think you'll want to.

I recently found a box of books that I hadn't opened for many years. In it were several books from my youth that I had wanted to read at some point. Indian Captive was one of them.

I really enjoyed this story much more than I thought I would. Lois Lenski did a good job of helping me feel a little girl's turmoil at being kidnapped from her family and forced to live among people she didn't look like or understand. Lenski did a lot of research for this novel, and so I felt as though I learned quite a bit while reading. I had no idea that Native Americans used a kind of "eye for an eye" system when it came to human lives: for every Indian the white men struck down and took away from an Indian family, the Indians would capture a white person in exchange. This white person would be scalped with the scalp presented to the lost Indian's family, or the captive would be presented to the family so that they could decide to torture him or her to death or to raise him or her in place of their lost loved one.

Mary Jemison was lucky: her Indian family decided to raise her as their own. They nurtured her and taught her their ways. Several years after she first came to the Indians, Mary was offered the choice of leaving to resume living with the "pale-faces" (though she had learned by this time that her family had been murdered a day or two after she was separated from them). But she chose to stay with her Indian family.

At any rate, this book made me curious enough to search out more about Mary (Molly) Jemison. Someone was smart enough to get her account of her life before she died, and it is available through the Gutenburg Project online. I read through that as well, and it was every bit as fascinating as this fictitious account led me to believe it would be.

There's a little something about the way Mary Higgins Clark writes that just doesn't make her a good read for me. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I feel the same way about her mother's (Mary Higgins Clark) writing. Almost like the storyline is too simple? The characters all seem to be too pedantic and maybe a bit silly? And on many occasions, I feel like a line is thrown in here or there to help beef up the page count, not necessarily to add to the story in any way.

But, every once in a while I do need a quick, light read to break up the monotony of heavier books. So I'm glad Carol Higgins Clark writes how she does; you just won't often find me with one of her books in my hands.

The story itself was a decent mystery, and you should pick it up if you want something grab-n-go.

P.S. I received a copy of this book through a Goodreads First Reads book giveaway.
Wow. I really, really enjoyed this psychological thriller; it was right up my alley! I haven't read Lehane before, but I'll probably give another book or two of his a try. Perhaps because I don't enjoy reading books where I already know the ending, I let Lehane's writing carry me through and did not find this story to be predictable, as some have said.

At any rate, a well deserved five stars!
