Quick summary:
if you're interested in comedians, performing, sketch comedy, or the history of stand-up comedy (circa 85-95) in LA, read at least the performance-related chapters.

- - - - - - - - - - -

The most appealing thing to me about Kathy Griffin is she seems constitutionally incapable of playing along with showbiz rules, which means every story she tells about the "real" side of celebrity-dom reveals the marketing and manipulation that goes on. That makes her, in a funny comedian sort of way, a kind of consumer advocate of the entertainment industry.

My point is that I think a lot of people dismiss KG unfairly, when she's actually smart, driven, and--a rarity in pop culture--subversive. And funny.

The book is decently written. Nothing that will blow you away, but Kathy and her ghostwriter successfully capture her rhythm of speaking, which helps make it more entertaining. Her press junket was all about her eating issues and her crazy dead brother, but the best parts of the book, in my opinion, were:

- The chapters on working at The Groundlings and working with stand-up and sketch comedians in LA. If you're a fan of sketch comedy, improv, or stand-up, it's great to learn more about this particular period in the industry's history.

- The chapter on Andy Dick's effed-up Florida performance. A perfect illustration of comedy as aggression.

- The epistolary chapter tracking the fauxmance between her and Steve Wozniak. It's just fun to read the Woz's personal emails and see what kind of person he is. I think he might be slightly autistic. Or maybe just a hippie, hard to tell.

- The reading guide, which makes total fun of reading guides and discussion groups.

The section on her failed marriage was painful to read because of how personal it was, particularly just how much it reveals about her ex-husband's own issues.

Nah. Greg Bear is really a sci-fi author who sometimes crosses over into techno-thriller type material. This is the only supernatural thing he's written, to my knowledge. Some of his earlier stuff is great if you're into hard/epic sci-fi, but look elsewhere for ghost stories.

One of my favorite older supernatural writers is Sheridan Le Fanu, an Irish guy from the early to mid-1800s. His ghost stories are really great, if you're okay with reading stuff from that time period. (He also wrote Carmilla, a famous vampire story with a female villain preying on a young girl.) Here's a good summary of some of his more famous works:

http://thecurmudgeonly.blogspot.com/2006...

Also, I assume you've read Richard Matheson's Hell House? A lot of the first part of "Dead Lines" reminded me of it, since it's also sort of a combination of supernatural and technological elements. I wouldn't call it the perfect ghost story but it's a fun read nonetheless and way better than any of the movie adaptations of it:

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33547...

If you have any good ghost stories to recommend to me, let me know! Thx.

There are few books that can cause me to laugh out loud in one paragraph, and later in the same chapter have me cringing in real fear or disgust. This book accomplished all of this and more.

John Dies at the End is not a literary masterpiece. Its plot has flaws. It needs some real face time with a legitimate editor - or at least someone likely to catch the numerous typos, misspellings and punctuation errors. The humor is abrupt and sophomoric.

But despite all that, this book is fun. It is thoroughly entertaining, and if that makes it a guilty pleasure, I will readily admit to it. Though the humor is often of a scatological nature, and of a type generally enjoyed by adolescent boys, it nonetheless caused me to laugh out loud on more than one occasion, many times when I would not have expected it. I actually think that this, along with the constant use of slang and pop culture references, are what make the narrator and his friends some of the most believable characters I have encountered in a novel in some time. I may not be John or David, but I probably have known some people at least a little like them. Especially in college.

And having those believable characters is key in a book like this. I will concede that the books prologue is probably better than the rest of the novel, but considering how it was written, that is an understandable flaw. What is amazing is the creativity and almost sheer "well, of *course* that happened!" nature of the world and the creatures and situations that Wong has imagined. Though I rarely read horror novels, and have little to compare it to in that regard, this book truly had me cringing in fear and suspense at more than one point. What's more, despite being a fan of science fiction and fantasy, Wong still created worlds and situations that I had never encountered before (granted, that might only mean I am not nearly well-read enough).

Bear in mind, though this initially seems to present itself as a horror novel, it slowly unfolds to be a science fiction/parallel worlds story that still manages to fill you with plenty of suspense and dread. The best way I can think to describe it is to imagine a bomber jet dropping a payload of Chuck Palahniuk bombs on a city made of H. P. Lovecraft skyscrapers: the resulting nuclear fallout victims would look a lot like this book.

Bottom line, this certainly isn't a book for everyone, but if you enjoy suspense, science fiction, and humor that includes lots of penis references, this may just be one you will enjoy.(less)
