Fire definitely does stand alone, but knowing who that crossover character is from Graceling makes Fire that much more compelling I think. That's kind of true but not really. When I'm reading fast, it's hard to force myself to slow down when I really want to find out what will happen. The only thing that works for me is to stop in the middle of a book and start over from the beginning again. That way I can savor the first half of the book without knowing how it will end.

There is something so magical about reading a book for the first time - it seems like slow readers can enjoy that more than fast ones.
