i never, ever read books like this, but this is the best book about love and passionate relationships. it made me feel so weirdly relaxed about how i feel about relationships, and was also strangely hopeful. a must-read for sure.

"Unfair picture? Unfortunately a picture I know" - Precious

i don't really know what else to say aside from that. if you don't believe that the things that happen to precious in this book are a reality for many people, you are kidding yourself.

it's hard to read, and it's raw, but this is a story that doesn't get told, and more often doesn't get considered. i imagine that people have the same comments to this book as some did to reading random family - that they couldn't believe it was real and that people made the same mistakes over and over. i think that precious does a lot to show that the things that happen are out of her control, but she is controlling what she can and trying to do what she can.

i read it in a day.

some of the detail is too detailed for me regarding the violence, but i suppose it serves its purpose to totally blow my mind that this kind of violence is perpetuated over soccer. wow.

i had hoped there would be more commentary on class, and there was definitely some of that, but more than anything it just chronicled bored, unsatisfied teen to adult males and their mob mentalities. an interesting comment on crowds to be sure, but not totally what i expected.

buford's ability to have the kind of relationship w various "hooligans" as an ethnographer is by far the most interesting part, although some of this want to experience acts of extreme violence almost plays into exactly what he seems to dislike about all of it.

a good non-fiction read for sure, especially for someone who was raised on soccer.

chuck klosterman writes the kind of things i want to read about consistently. much like my review of air guitar, he weaves together everything - obsessive love of sports, references to the wire, marketing and advertising, weird anecdotes from his own life - into something i tear through every single time. i want to write like this myself, constantly.

in the words of chuck himself, "And this is all I want from everything, all the time, always."
