this book made me want to climb everest.
it's no secret to my friends or family that i'm slightly obsessed with the world's tallest peak. there was an inkling in me before i read this book...that turned into a roar afterward. though i will admit, true to form, krakauer writes of the harrowing events so fully that i found myself shivering--whether from self-imposed cold, or the blood curdling thoughts of disaster on the heights, i'm not sure.
anyone who likes adventure stories...disaster or suvival will enjoy this book....less

i pilfered this book from my best friend's kitchen table. it took me six months to return it. but it didn't take me nearly that long to read it.
this is a wonderful collection of some of krakauer's best outside works. as always, he demonstrates his ability to put the reader right where the action is. it's easy to imagine yourself climbing the eiger alongside him, or swearing and stamping out the flames on his tent when the roach he dropped set them alight.

also had to read this book for my sociology class.
this book was phenomenal...so many ideas to consider, if you're open-minded enough to accept them. as a christian, i found this book fascinating, the way it challenges long-held beliefs that creation ended with man and that we are endowed to rule over everything. i argued long and hard with another christian friend about what this meant. to rule does not mean to destroy, which ishmael shows that man is doing.
all in all, this is a really wonderful book, with so many mind-bogging ideas it's impossible for me to remember them all. if you can get past the talking gorilla...let your mind be boggled....less

i had to read this for a sociology class dealing with social change in the forms of environamentalism and the war in the middle east.
unfortunately i never came close to finishing this book, but what i did manage to make it through was nothing short of amazing. it's so wonderfully informative about cultures and places many americans only hear on the news. i found myself intrigued and outraged that the people we de-humanize also de-humanize us. it's no wonder we are in a war with one another....less

this book opened the door to the world of mountaineering books. it's true, i'd read touching the void several years prior, but with this book climbing found it's foothold in me. filled with narrow escapes: both comical and harrowing...you get to see how all of aron's choices brought him to the one distinct moment in the desert that made him famous....or at least infamous.
i've had many heated discussions with climbing friends about aron's decision to go alone and not leave any trace. many people feel it was a stupid choice, but i haven't met anyone who can discount his badass-ness for cutting off his own arm....less
