As usual, the focus here is more on the effect of the crimes on Kate and her crew, rather than the crimes and the criminal(s). This makes for some interesting musings on relationships - both abusive and healthy. Lots of Kali imagery. But... there was a wrap-up of all the action in one page. "Pat" is too mild of a word to describe this ending. I was pretty disappointed. I'm hoping this isn't a trend for all of King's books because I find her writing and musings very enjoyable.

First of King's Kate Martinelli books. The main character - Kate - is a new detective for the San Francisco PD. This mystery is a bit of a change from the many Ian Rankin, PD James books I've read, although it's close to James than Rankin. The art of one character plays a pretty important role in telling us about her in ways she cannot, and King does a remarkable job of recreating the art, with detailed descriptions of paintings, exposition about women's role in art, etc, that made it seem very real to me. Very good.

I picked this on a whim - reminded me of Gaiman's "Neverwhere" - and I'm glad I did. It's technically juvenile fiction, and centers around the activities of a young girl. Set in a fictional version of London, as you might have guessed from the title, the book seems to be headed in a somewhat predictable but fun direction at the onset, but takes on a few unexpected turns that keeps things interesting.

I wonder if King mapped out her characters far in advance? The first mentions of the goings-on in this book were brought up in early books, written years before this one. I love the character development and the commitment to them. We get both Holmes' and Russell's voices in this book (as opposed to just Russell's). Set in San Francisco in the 20's, there's a wonderful sense of place and time, including references to the turn-of-the-century earthquake and fire that devastated SF.

Charming, witty writing. The focus is on more of the relationships and the unfolding of the story than on suspense and mystery. There are lovely feminist twists here and there. A nice, light read.

Another take on the Sherlock Holmes story. This time, it's told from the pov of Mary Russell, his companion, understudy and, eventually, wife. More focus on the relationship and back-and-forth between Holmes and Russell, than on the mysteries, but it's really not as boring as that sounds. I was charmed and will seek out all of these books.
