I enjoyed this one by Barr also. The two stories, alternating chapter by chapter are compelling and full of historical reality. That Anna, the main character of the Nevada Barr series, is one super woman who leaves the male comic book/film heroes of the past decades in the dust. She does not seem to be afraid of anything! I did feel sorry for Mack, a man who wants to do good, yet will stoop to the wrong means to accomplish his purpose. Barr must spend much time on research to give her novels such a ring of truth. The Dr Mudd story is good also, and the reader begins to be assured of his innocence. (Though I cannot imagaine writing such LONG letters as the captain's wife writes in relating her story.)

A good suspensful story!!!!!

After reading David McCullough’s outstanding biography, I now have a new favorite president. John Adams was advocate for the declaration of independence in congress, the young lawyer willing to defend the British soldiers accused in the Boston massacre, the President who avoided war with the French, the envoy and ambassador to Britain and France. Adams was passionate, opinionated, objective, a scholar committed to books and reading, and an incorruptible champion for his country. Adams greatest blessing was his supportive and capable wife, Abigail. A central theme was his long and tumultuous relationship with Thomas Jefferson, whose character suffers by comparison with Adams. I was especially taken by Adams’ vulnerability and sense of failure in his early days as an envoy to France with Benjamin Franklin. His ability to overcome this “failure” is a lesson to us all. McCullough was able to document Adams’ life so well because of his voluminous correspondence with Abigail, Jefferson, and his good friend Benjamin Rush. Modern biographers will have to cope with the dearth of detailed information from the pen of the subject with the demise of letters.(less)

In this morning's paper there is an article about searching KKK clan members before they gather in Oxford, Mississippi. Nevada Barr surely picks up on that sutuation as well as other items of interest peculiar to the South. This is a good novel, and I plan to read more Barr.

I wondered at the beginning of the novel why the Civil War inactors???? and, yes, I did learn why. I enjoyed the author's descriptions of the various characters and laughed as the make-up attempts of the assistant high school principal kept changing with the passing days. Some excellent description.

Though I was somewhat troubled by the main character, Anna Pigeon, ( I did not want her to drink so much) I also admired her courage, her understanding of people and her fortitute.

This is a good story!!!!!

Finishing this book was like finishing the last book in the Harry Potter series--I was devastated knowing there will be no more!

Stieg Larsson did such an incredible job of wrapping up the first two books in the series with this one. It was 602 pages of incredible "can't get enough of these great characters" good stuff. The first two books each had their own journalism adventure/theme. This book takes all the loose ends in the first two books, continuing where the second book left off (quite a cliffhanger!), and ties them all up in a neat little package. Other than a little too much boring "meat" in the middle about the structure of the Swedish government and the Secret Police, Hornet's Nest is extremely well-written, as well as exciting. No guilt!

Lisbeth Salander has got to be one of the most awesome heroines in modern literature--she is so incredibly invincible. Mikael Blomvkist is also someone I could not get enough of. I can't wait to see who plays these two in the movies! Dick, you once asked if I recommed this book. Yes, it is so interesting and the construction of the story/ies is a masterpiece. This is maybe five or so novels in one. The stories which make good reading individually are interwovin in an extradorinary manner; the reader learns so much.

The novel begins in Sarajivo in 1948 and 1996 and later takes place in Seville in 1480 and moves to other location such as Venice. An australian rare book expert follows the history of a Jewish prayer book and in her attempt to learn the history of the book from the artifacts lwet in the book: the wine stain, the hair, the butterfly wing, etc., learns/imagines much about the people who have had contact with the book.

I think all of you will enjoy this one. Read it when you can concentrate: there are quite a few characters to keep track of.

Geraladine Brooks has alo writtten MARCH a book about Louisa May Alcott's father's experiences during the civil War. have any of you read that?

Dick, you some time ago recommended "The Martian Chronicals." which I can not find at our local library, but I have my eye open for it.

I wonder if I have read this book before???? I seemed able to expect everything that occured, BUT it is a wonderful, fast read if you have a few hours to spare and do not feel like concentrating. And the main character's attempts to bring her husband out of his coma using so many sensory stimuli is a wonderful suggestion of what can be done for a patient.

The woman who used to live in the house ( her ghost), the next door neighbor and her difficulty with her husband, the nursing home residents and some of the staff all work to make this a sensitive and realistic --maybe not the woman who once lived in the house!-- novel.

I like Elizabeth Berg. I do not have to think and yet I always learn something.
