I've been trying to get my hands on this book for months, mostly because it's by Jodi Picoult. But when I read the synopsis on this website, I grew even more eager to have it because it kinda reminded me of My Sister's Keeper, which has got to be Jodi Picoult's BEST work to date (Not really on the same page when it comes to the movie, though! the ending was so disappointing!). I had to wait quite a long time for the paperback version to be published, and when it finally did, I didn't waste any second. I bought both Handle With Care and Plain Truth, but decided to read this one first because it's thicker and I happened to have some free time at that moment.

So, anyway. As I went through the pages, I realize that the phase was a little slow. Slower than MSK, but with the same technique (story telling from different points of view or the character). I immediately fell in love with Willow and the bond between her and her sister, Amelia. I also fell in love with Piper's character who was this very energetic, alive, and kinda happy-go-lucky type of girl. I couldn't say the same about Charlotte, though. From the moment I read it, I knew that she was going to be the same like June Nealon, that mother character from Change of Heart, and that kind of character kinda ticks me off.

I ABSOLUTELY ADORE Willow's simple, innocent yet heart-gripping, straight-to-the-core statements she said to her mother. How she begged her mom not to get rid of her, how she promised Charlotte she would be a better daughter and be stronger. I can never help but shed a tear, reading Willow's emotions when she found out about the lawsuit. And how I hate Charlotte even more for making Willow feel THAT miserable.


Unfortunately, the ending didn't really get to me. Somehow the result of the trial was predictable, and it's become a .... how do you say it? "A failed attempt to relive My Sister's Keeper".

Mercy is my least favorite book by Jodi Picoult, and sadly I have to say that Handle With Care has won the second place. Although I shed quite a few tears reading this novel, I prefer Salem Falls to this one.

Next stop: Plain Truth! :)

Gue ENGGAK PEDULI!

Karena buku ini sebenarnya adalah kitab. Kitab bagi orang-orang penghayal, pemilik mimpi-mimpi yang, di zaman sekarang, sudah dianggap sebagai 'mimpi pinggiran'. Mimpi yang tidak menjanjikan.

Yaitu mimpi hidup dalam seni, menghirup udara seni, tenggelam dalam seni.

Dengan kata lain, buku ini adalah kitab bagi gue.


Gue AMAT SANGAT JATUH CINTA pada buku ini. Gue melihat banyak kesamaan antara gue dan Kugy, dari mulai cita-citanya, kehidupan dengan teman-temannya, sampai kecintaannya pada seorang Keenan. Yup, I have fallen in love with that guy too. Who doesn't?


Banyak temen-temen gue yang bilang bahwa novel ini terlalu ngalur-ngidul. Mirip sinetron, dengan pace yg lambat. Tapi menurut gue sama sekali enggak. Semuanya mengalir seperti air. Gue tenggelam dalam kehidupan Kugy dan Keenan, menjalaninya seperti sedang menjalani kehidupan sendiri.

Bagi gue, pengalaman membaca buku ini bisa dideskripsikan seperti mengarungi lautan. Pada awalnya tenang dan lancar, namun laut bisa tanpa diduga menyerang kita dengan badai dan hantaman ombak. Begitu juga dengan membaca Perahu Kertas. Gue tertawa ngakak ngebaca pengalaman dan pembicaraan konyol Kugy, Keenan, dkk; gue terharu saat Keenan memberikan ilustrasi untuk dongeng-dongengnya; gue marah saat ada konflik Kugy-Noni; gue tersenyum malu-malu setiap Keenan melakukan atau mengatakan hal-hal manis; dan menitikkan air mata sedih saat Keenan dan Kugy bertemu di rumah Karel, kakaknya Kugy.


Di buku ini, banyak banget kutipan-kutipan yang gue suka. Beberapa di antaranya adalah:

"Betul. Memang begitu aturan mainnya. Menjadi sesuatu yang bukan diri kamu dulu untuk akhirnya menjadi diri kamu yang asli." (Keenan)

"Karena hati tidak perlu memilih. Ia selalu tahu kemana harus berlabuh." (Luhde)

"Kata sandi?"
"Klapertaat."
"Hah? Keparat?" (Kugy & Keenan)

and, last but absolutely not the least, kutipan dari surat yang ada di scrapbook Kugy. Surat yang isinya benar-benar murni dari hati Kugy, diungkapkan dengan bahasa yang polos namun sincere:

"Karena hanya bersama kamu, segalanya terasa dekat, segala sesuatunya ada, segala sesuatunya benar. Dan Bumi hanyalah sebutir debu di bawah telapak kaki kita."



SALUT! AMAT SANGAT SALUT dengan Dee!
Dan bagi semua orang yang menganggap buku ini kalah telak dengan Recto Verso, gue cuma bisa bilang satu hal:
Recto Verso dan Perahu Kertas sama sekali beda, enggak akan bisa dibandingkan. Sekumpulan cerpen yang notabene isinya berbagai macam cerita dengan suasana dan atmosfer berbeda-beda enggak bisa nyambung kalau dibandingkan dengan sebuah novel yang dari awal hingga akhir memiliki tokoh yang sama.


Last, but not least, gue ingin berterima kasih pada Dee. Berkat Perahu Kertas ini, gue yakin bahwa suatu saat mimpi gue akan menjadi kenyataan.
