I've said this before in other reviews, but I'll say it again.... This isn't Literature for the Ages, but within its genre, I'd say it's a five-star book. I know this genre -- it's sort of like newspaper journalism, a little bit formulaic as she tells each separate story. But the births she writes about just come alive. What a life! I always think everyone has an interesting story to tell, but this woman has about a million riveting stories. The incredible characters she has met! And she sees people at their primal best and worst. I actually laughed out loud -- once until I was nearly in pain -- at a couple of anecdotes, and it's not easy to write funny. She captures not only funny but touching, suspenseful, scary and just plain out-there. And when it comes time for her to write about injustice, she pretty much makes me want to jump up and pound my fists on something. I enjoyed this very much.

Basically a good message in this book, and there were some pretty good plot twists. My 7-year-old son enjoyed it, although if I'd previewed it, I probably would have waited until he was a little older. It wasn't exactly corrupting or anything, but the steroid theme was perhaps a bit on the mature side for a youngish kid. We were able to discuss the issues, though.

I was divided in my reaction to this book. Much of it reads more like a scandal sheet than a serious, incisive critique of the Secret Service. But in the end, I became convinced that the author's main points were valid: the Secret Service has become poorly managed and spread too thin, and the security of our leaders is at stake.

I'm no sports fan, but this book is fantastic. This could be another one of those run-of-the-mill, down-and-out-guy-makes-good biographies, but Lewis does so much more with the story. He does a great job of researching and finding out not only about his subject, who is so tight-lipped as to be almost impenetrable, but also about trends in football as a whole and how everything coalesced at just the right moment to bring Michael Oher from poverty and obscurity to the top of the game. Well-written, fascinating, definitely worth the time.

Wow. What an amazing story. This book is worthwhile just for the description of life at the South Pole. Nielsen's survival of and self-treatment for breast cancer while there are plan incredible.
