Wow. What an amazing story. This book is worthwhile just for the description of life at the South Pole. Nielsen's survival of and self-treatment for breast cancer while there are plan incredible.

Cherlin says there are far more marriages and divorces in the U.S. than in the rest of the developed world. He attributes this to two conflicting ideas in American thought: the importance/desirability of marriage, and its seeming opposite, individualism. He says Americans aren't even divided into two camps -- it's more that the same conflicting ideas coexist in each of our brains. It's too late at night for me to make much sense, so I'll just say that if you're interested in sociology and marriage/family issues, this is a good read. It's more of a thoughtful investigation and analysis of WHY things are the way they are; it's not so much a screed or diatribe about how things SHOULD be.

I thought this was a sensitively-written picture of a girl who struggles with accepting her younger brother's autism. My son and I listened to this audiobook. At 7, he was probably a bit young to grasp some of the awkwardness of the social situations described in the book -- this is probably better for about ages 10 through upper teens. I especially appreciated the friendship that developed between the girl and a physically handicapped boy, which then led her to a greater understanding of her brother. Great story.

I'm using this book to teach my autistic daughter (almost 4 years old) to read. We're not very far into it yet, but thus far, I'm really impressed. I think it's going to help our daughter learn to sound out words. I would suspect that this book would teach a typical child to read in no time at all.
