Remember how the Greek gods always liked to seduce humans and beget children with them? Well, they still do. Young Percy (Perseus) Jackson is perpetually in trouble at school. He has diagnoses of dyslexia and ADHD - turns out that's a combination that tends to mean mommy or daddy is a deity. The ADHD is good for battle skills and the dyslexia means your brain is "hardwired for ancient Greek" (I have some trouble buying that one, but ok, whatever). Percy gets kicked out of his sixth school in six years and goes to Camp Half-Blood - the only place he should be safe fromvthe monsters that are out to get him. Trouble is brewing there too though... turns out Percy's dad is a big player in the supernatural realm , but only Percy can put some wrong things to right. This is a good, fun fantasy-adventure for kids.

Rather odd story told in pictures - the artwork was compared somewhere to Edward Gorey's, but, while I love his work, this didn't do much for me.

Interesting little book of spooky stories - most are adaptations of traditional stories or ballads. I found this the young adult section of the library, and I think we have it in the children's section as well, but it is really an all-ages type of book.

This is the first book in a young-adult fantasy series set in a Texas college town, which turns out to be run by vampires. I really enjoyed it. It is very suspenseful, and ends with a cliffhanger. I would not have preferred that - I don't need a cliffhanger to make me want to read the next one, but that's ok.
Minor quibble: when we are very specifically told the heroine is taking Calculus II, why does it later say she spends the afternoon with quadratic equations, which sounds a lot more like Algebra I?
