A great read. Martin Beck is a very obtuse and morose character, clearly the prototype for his myriad predecessors, Erlendur, Van Veeteran and Wallander. This book was written in the 60s, so you have this interesting shapshot of police work before the era of modern communication. There's no voicemail, cell phones, email, internet. Instead you have telegrams and people having to stay near the phone lest they miss a call. This book will really speak to you if you do any riding around the East Bay Hills. Schull has a gift for description of place and even though he never once mentions the specific name of a road he is cycling on, it's very easy to indentify Tunnel, Grizzly Peak, Wildcat Canyon, The Three Bears and Pinehurst amongst others. I really love this little gem of a book by Paul Fournel. For various reasons, it took me a long time to get this latest Nesser tome. I was so excited about it, that I pre-ordered it from Amazon. Sadly it failed to deliver on the promise of his previous three Van Veeteren mysteries. The story is rather plodding and not very interesting and the conclusion is extremely unsatisfying.
