I've read a few reviews that say the one-off poems that begin and end this book are inferior to its interconnected series of middle-section poems, but I disagree. They're almost all compelling studies of mother/wife-hood, but the middle poems seemed almost self-indulgent and sloppy, while the shorter ones at the front and back were lean and resonant--more so, I thought, for their compression. Maybe it's just a taste thing.

Maybe I've just gotten wise to M. Gladwell's schtick, but I wasn't nearly as absorbed in this one as Blink or The Tipping Point. Or maybe I just get bored reading about hockey and lawyers. Outliers has some absorbing case studies (MG's specialty) and makes some interesting points about the role of a heritage/hard work combo in success, but it almost felt like he didn't have enough material for a whole book. Is there a non-fiction version of the novella? It should have been one of those.

I read both of Gillian Flynn's books when I had the flu, so it's possible that if I'd read them without a fever, I'd have liked them more or less. But they're both pleasant reads that combine the lurid absorption of a true crime cable show with fluid, often striking, prose. I preferred this one to her first, though not enough to warrant an extra star (why doesn't goodreads have 1/2 stars?). Flynn is especially good at creating focal female characters who are shitbags that you end up rooting for--it's a formula that works, but I can see it getting old if she doesn't develop any new tricks for her next book.

Disclaimer: that five stars is based on the first six poems, which are so perfect (gorgeous sonics, the most resonant use of chimney-pots and geraniums. Also, "as if the world gave up / the secret of its skeleton") that I can't bear to give them any less. But then there's the rest. I assume they're better than I think they are.
