i hesitated rating it a 4, and had considered a 5. for me, it is more like a 4.5 (not quite a 5), and that is just because i wasn't too big on the ending. i also want to see the movie and probably will during winter break.

Easily one of the most graphic books I have ever read, and still trying to absorb it all. Will write a review later.

I've read a few translations of the Aeneid (for obvious reasons) and BY FAR my fav is Stanley Lombardo. It's a fairly new translation (just a few years old), and I think captures the essence of the Aeneid a bit better than Fitzgerald and the others. Now...to your comment that it's just a rip-off of the Iliad. To a certain extent, it is a rip-off (in the modern sense), but it really isn't because it really is simply alluding to and playing off of the Iliad as opposed to just "ripping it off." The Aeneid is a much different piece of literature than the Iliad (and the Odyssey, for that matter), and the more I read it, the more I think it is actually better (especially in the original language). The Iliad, to me, doesn't have all of the aspects of human drama that we see in the Aeneid, and that's the sort of stuff I like. As for the propaganda charge, it is true, but finding all of the hidden propaganda is part of what makes reading the Aeneid interesting--it's almost like Vergil double-dog-dared you to be smart enough to catch all of his political and historical allusions. Read the Lombardo translation or revisit the Latin and I bet you like it more.

Well, I didn't see all of the movie, but I did some some of it and I will say it was the movie that made me go out and get the book. It is pretty much as weird as the movie, some scenes from the movie are essentially lifted from the book. I like Burroughs. He's funny.
