Jane Eyre is a favorite novel of mine, so it was with some degree of trepidation that I approached James’ The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Bronte. I feared the novel would lean heavily on speculation and cause me to crave Bronte’s actual words even more. But I was quite wrong. Through meticulous research, James has captured the essence of who Bronte was and carefully marked the events in her life that were the basis of her writings. James could have allowed this life beset with tragedy to darken the pages of the novel, but rather she chose to follow Bronte’s lead and fan the delicate flames of hope.
Not only am I inspired to read Bronte’s lesser known works, I am most anxious to read James’ The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen.
