Lowry, I enjoyed the embedded story, too, and yet it was a major letdown when (a) it stopped and (b) Iris finally reads the first installment in a pulp magazine and later learns that that was pretty much it: no continuation. So... that's a pretty grim move on the part of the author. It's like saying: "These flights of the imagination? Oh, they end, and sooner than you want them to." Which, I suppose, is true in life. And the ending of the book seems to argue that the documentary approach -- an account of a life lived, which is what Iris is writing -- is the real story. And, yet, I suppose too that the existence of the novel itself is an argument in itself, that the world of fiction (the work of the imagination) actually does outlast reality.

Hmmm, not circular, but certainly an endless loop of effect.

You made me think more about this. Very smart, full realized book, and yet I can't say I'll look back fondly on it. It was a difficult reading experience, in many ways.
