Reading Albion's Seed made me pick up this book--and it is wonderful! I have recommended it to many friends, and they all love it, too. My favorite scene is George and his horse standing by the bridge as the men come back from battle. We came so close to not being a country at all--this is the man that made it happen.

I absolutely love this book, and recommend it to anyone who loves military history. This is the true source of the famous "band of brothers" line, even if Henry himself didn't say it. I have mailed this to Iraq in care packages, and to all my nephews, nieces, and cousins on active duty. It's not long, and there are parts that I must admit I sped through--I am not a big fan of logistics. But the book is more than worthwhile--it's a jewel!

This book started me reading history again! It enlightened me about the beginnings of many things in our culture, and as big as it was, I could not put it down. I borrowed a copy to read, and went out and bought the book--hardly ever happens for me, especially when it's a book I can find in the library. My copy is full of sticky notes and references, the way any really good reference book should be, like "Joy of Cooking" or "Home Comforts" --and yet I have read it straight through twice. Writing this note makes me think I should go back and read it again...!

This book was so fascinating, it sent me to the library to read much, much more about this period in our continent's early history.
