Two and a half stars. Compared to the first two books, this one was a big disappointment. SPOILER ALERT: The first two books had fantastic plot twists. Absolutely brilliant. This one, not at all. In fact, when Gen pulls off his little trick more than half way through the book, I thought the question of "Will he be accepted as King" was resolved. Yes, how that all played out was a plot twist, but not terribly unexpected. I knew Gen was up to something and would show his true colors eventually. Plus, there was still so much of the book left, I was waiting for that shocking revelation at the end that I'd come to expect from the first two books. I was excited to see what would happen next, now that the real Gen was out and about.

I was frustrated by his pointless return to acting like a nitwit. I kept expecting some sort of surprise at the end, some reason for all this, but there wasn't one. We never hear more about the Medes or the missing Sounis heir or about Eddis and the Mage. I thought more was going to happen there, but it didn't, and if the last third of the book weren't devoted to repeating the conflict of the first two thirds of the book, these things COULD'VE been dealt with. Where was my clever Gen? Reducing the Guard was his big goal? Are you kidding me? He could've done that in an afternoon (oh wait, he DID) and he could've done it the day after taking care of that baron. What was the big deal? It seems like all that was accomplished in the last part of the book was Gen pouting some more. Ugh, the more I think about it, the more frustrated I get. There were scenes in this book I really loved, so that's why I gave it three stars, but it's really not a full three stars. I'm so disappointed. :(

A later note:

Hmmm... I just read that there might be another book coming out. I thought this was a complete trilogy and so went into it with the expectation that certain storylines would get resolved. If there's another book coming out, I can live with that. However, I still don't like that the ENTIRE book was devoted to "Will Eugenides really accept being a King? Will everyone else really accept him?" As a reader, I KNEW what the answer was going to be. Of course the answer to both of those questions was YES! As I've already said, that felt resolved when he took out that house of the Baron anyway. And that's where that storyline should've ended. After that, I got sick of him dragging his feet. Maybe he didn't want to be king. Fine. I get it. I understand. Okay already. But he's not stupid and he knew (like everyone else in the book) that if he didn't act like a king, he would weaken the country. He. Knew. That. Yet, he decided to pout about it instead. To the detriment of his wife and his country. Nope. I'm not too happy about that.(less)

This is the start of an amazing series that just gets better with each book. If you found The Thief a little slow at times, hang in there for the other two--the journey is well worth it. I can't stop talking about this gem of a book. It's my new must-recommend to readers of all stripes. Also, I seldom grant myself the luxury of re-reading books anymore, but this book absolutely merits an IMMEDIATE re-read because it is only on the second read that her true genius reveals itself fully.

At first I was sad to lose Gen's first person narration from the Thief (if you haven't read The Thief, START THERE!), but what we lose in intimacy, we gain in perspective and complexity. This is a much darker tale than The Thief, but it is a necessary step in the journey. This is an amazingly gripping read for readers of all genres and ages--It is far from typical YA. There is nothing language or content wise to alarm parents, but particularly squeamish parents or sensitive tweens might want to tread cautiously--but the tale is well worth it.

I wish there were a 10 star option. I read several hundred books a year, and of those, very few are fantasy. Thanks to my degrees, I have read many of the "classics." However, this little tome ranks as easily one of the ten best books I have EVER read. It MUST be read following The Thief and The Queen of Attolia, and it is probably best to read the series fairly close to each other as there are many subtle details that are layered in that are easily lost. This is a gem of a book, and with no more than glances, it crafts one of the most enduring, complex love stories I have ever encountered.

I liked this one a lot, and I liked that it covers four years--unusual for a YA, but the plot seems to suffer a little. There are a lot of new characters, sub plots, and not so much of a cohesive plot, but it is still a lot of fun.

This might be the strongest offering in the series--I loved the character growth and the tight writing in this one. I do recommend reading Sloppy Firsts before this one though as it just doesn't make much sense without it.
