This is a curious book. I read it almost accidentally. Everyone should consider reading it because, well, everyone dies. Some portions are a bit more in-depth than what someone not especially interested in funerary or mortuary sciences may find intriguing. The chapter on the facts of embalming, alone, is worth tracking this book down for.

Perhaps my favorite John Steinbeck novel (as long as "East of Eden" isn't within earshot). With "Cannery Row," Steinbeck manages to make living as a bum on the streets of Monterey, California seem like a pleasant life indeed.

I learned to half-play some Woody Guthrie songs. A neat songbook with illustrations (although obscure) by Woody. It even includes several of his less popular, though no less clever, songs for children.

My experience with this book was deeply affected by having first seen the film. If you've done neither, I suggest first reading the book. Further, it's my humble opinion that the film is so-so.

A brief one by McCarthy. Not a stand-out novel but an enjoyable one no less. Those who haven't read McCarthy should consider beginning with "The Road" or "No Country for Old Men."
