Michael's Recent Updates

The Runes of the Earth by Stephen R. Donaldson
" Can you accomplish good by doing evil? It’s a conundrum as old as the Adam and Eve narrative and that one clearly answers in the negative. Stephen R. Donaldson takes us back to “the Land” of the original six books of The Chronicles of Thomas Coven... " Read more of this review »

Exploding the Phone by Phil Lapsley
Anyone who has read Steven Levy's excellent 'Hackers' will be familiar with the story of the original phone phreakers; if you want a more detailed history of the phenomena and the people involved, this is the book. I thought it was fascinating, altho...more

The art gets better in these stories - first with the late Gene Colan (who was better put to use on Daredevil) and then George Tuska - but Tony Stark is still boring. I have to laugh at how relatively useless his armor is most of the time.

Captain America by Ed Brubaker
Brubaker's run on CA is what I consider the definitive run of the character. I can't find fault with anything - except for the fact that Cap's death (much like Batman's death which happened at the same time) was negated within a matter of months. Tha...more

Annihilation: Book Three
by Keith Giffen

An exciting culmination to the first chunk of Marvel's cosmic resurgence. I could probably give this five stars, but the last section of the collection (Heralds of Galactus) fell pretty flat.

James George Frazer
“Hence the strong attraction which magic and science alike have exercised on the human mind; hence the powerful stimulus that both have given to the pursuit of knowledge. They lure the weary enquirer, the footsore seeker, on through the wilderness of disappointment in the present by their endless promises of the future: they take him up to the top of an exceeding high mountain and show him, beyond the dark clouds and rolling mists at his feet, a vision of the celestial city, far off, it may be, but radiant with unearthly splendour, bathed in the light of dreams.”
James George Frazer, The Golden Bough. A Study in Magic and Religion: Volume 1

Wayne W. Dyer
“Friends are God's way of apologizing for your family.”
Wayne W. Dyer, The Power of Intention: Learning to Co-create Your World Your Way

Stephen R. Donaldson
“Joy is in the ears that hear.”
Stephen R. Donaldson

James A. Garfield
“It has occurred to me that the thing you have, that all men have enough of, is perhaps the thing that you care for the best, and that is your leisure - the leisure you have to think; the leisure you have to be let alone; the leisure you have to throw the plummet into your mind, and sound the depth and dive for things below.”
James A. Garfield, The Works Of James Abram Garfield

Kim Stanley Robinson
“We are here to inscribe ourselves on the universe, and it is not inappropriate to remind ourselves of this when blank slates are given us.”
Kim Stanley Robinson, 2312
