Dan E Burns, Ph.D. is a University professor, a writer, an Autism support organizer and perhaps most importantly a father who refused to give up on his child.

About the book:

In 1990 Sue and Dan Burns 3rd child, Ben was diagnosed with Autism. It seems strange to read that only 19 years ago the medical community believed that Autism was an incurable and untreatable disease. The recommendation for this family was to institutionalize their son.

This is a heartbreaking yet truly inspirational book. Despite resistance from the medical community, his family, the educational system and a mentally ill ex-wife, Dan Burns is insistent on helping his son. He pursues every avenue of research, hires a full-time therapy staff, breaks down barriers within the school and medical community and fights his own personal demons for two decades to help his son try and defeat autism.

The writing is excellent, leading us quickly through a book that refuses to be put down. I picked up this book and read it in one sitting. The only problem I found that it was too short and I wanted to read more! It’s a truly honest story about a family and their journey to recovery for their selves and their son.

Recommended for: parents and families of disabled children, anyone working in the health care or educational system, anyone with an interest in Autism.
