Petra's post in another thread made me think...what are some of our favorite fairy tales?

I love the early stuff--they're full of things we wouldn't want our children to read. I posted something on this here:

Fairy Tales about Fairy Tales

I think, by far, my favorite tale is BLUE BEARD. It's horribly scary...so I don't know why it's so fascinating!

Anyone else??

What are some of the oddest birth control methods you've read about in historical fiction or nonfiction? (OCD Lori--Online Comment Director--is this too risque?)

Catherine Delors posted this on 18th century contraception. What do y'all think? Have any other good links/reads?
Birth Control History

I read this book shortly after returning from my second trip to India. It captures so much of India, the splendor, the squalor, the injustice, the fight to survive. Some scenes had me gasping; it's an intense but richly satisfying read. I felt truly transported, in an honest and unflinching way.

I find myself rereading this about every 5 years. Don't know why--but each time it is a delight. It's also something of a post-modern dreamscape...a constant play on signified and signifier.

This is a dense, but highly informative book. Arikha has a firm command of her topic and offers insights that go well beyond standard approaches/understandings of the humors, health, and healing. I especially appreciated they way she traces this way of understanding of the body from Antiquity all the way into our modern age.
