This was another free kindle book and so I didn't even know what it was about when I started reading it. What a pleasant surprise. This books is unlike any dragon book I have ever read and it was a very nice change of pace. We have Captain Laurence a naval captain who acquires a dragon egg after defeating the French ship that was carrying it. He sacrifices his naval career when he is the one to "harness" the newly hatched Temeraire as he is now tied to him and is expected to serve in the Aerial Corps. I liked that we had a mature hero that made mature decisions. I liked that there was no big bad evil villian, just the common enemy (neither good nor bad) you face in a real war. It was an interesting spin on the Napoleanic war. A heartwarming book told with pictures. Loved the illustrations and the simplicity. My only complaint with this and other picture books that feature only illustrations (i.e. Un-Brella) is the size. I wish the publishers would make the books bigger so they are easier to share with a class of 20 plus students.
