Another solid entry. This series might be one of the most intentionally created things I've ever seen. Just an awesome example of using story to teach.

The best of what makes this series and this hero great. She is a spiritual successor to the old Spider-Man/Peter Parker stories. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by life and/or just not good enough, then this series--and this volume in particular--has ...more

I really enjoyed the first volume, but I just couldn't figure out what was going on here. The action was choppy and felt like it was missing whole pages. Visually, it was just hard to follow.

The first half of the book (while they were in space) was interesting, with developing characters. The female lead was good and there was a solid cast being built around her. Then they landed, and everything changed. Most of the crew vanished, the ac ...more

“We are all more than our experiences
And less than our dreams

“But when adults speak up for the vulnerable and the weak, working and demanding that safety and respect prevail, God's little lambs are protected and nourished. They know they are not abandoned; they are loved. And the world becomes a little more like heaven as a result.”

“Hester shook her head. 'Don't confuse what you do with who you are, dearie. Besides, there's no shame in humble work. Why, Aesop himself, the king of storytellers, was a slave his whole life. Never drew a free breath, yet he shaped the world with just three small words: there once was. And where are his great masters now, hmm? Rotting in tombs, if they're lucky. But Aesop - he still lives to this day, dancin' on the tip of every tongue what's ever told a tale.' She winked at Molly. 'Think on that, next time you're scrubbing floors.”

“Stories come in all different kinds." Hester scooted closer, clearly enjoying the subject at hand. "There's tales, which are light and fluffy. Good for a smile on a sad day. Then you got yarns, which are showy-yarns reveal more about the teller than the story. After that there's myths, which are stories made up by whole groups of people. And last of all, there's legends." She raised a mysterious eyebrow. "Legends are different from the rest on account no one knows where they start. Folks don't tell legends; they repeat them. Over and over again through history.”
Jonathan Auxier, The Night Gardener

“It all begins, I maintain, with that powerful and underutilized thing called love. God's love for the individual is displayed by those people who reflect his love in their words and deeds. It ultimately gets understood and accepted by the child in poverty, and through that individual's love for others, the world gets changed.”
