Charming book about family and growing up. I read it nearly every winter. I'm one of those people who can read a classic without relating the culture it portrays to our own times. So it doesn't really bother me when the book moralizes (which, I will admit, gets to be a little much) or portrays attitudes that would not be considered proper feminists attitudes now. I think that you have to keep the time period that it was written for in mind. With that in mind, I just love this book. ]]>

Good read. I can't say that I was enthralled, but it was a good book. It seemed to lack some emotional connection for me. There was little emotion in the book (I would have expected some, considering all that she goes through). I get the fact that Karana would be lonely, I wanted to really feel the loneliness. ]]>

This book took me forever (I think I was a little bit intimidated by the 900 page count and the giant paragraphs that made up a large part of the text), but I really enjoyed it. The characters had so much depth, and it focused marriage in a way that few classics do. It looked at the character's lives in marriage, not just getting the altar. There are so many books that end right where this book begins. I prefer to think that the married lives in those books are a lot happier than for most of the characters in this novel (Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet ARE going to live happily ever after), but I enjoyed the perspective that this one gives. This is definately one that I would read again. ]]>
