The second in the Gemma Doyle series, this book picks up relatively soon after the first one ends. There is a good mix of personal trouble and otherworldly issues. It deals with themes of fate versus destiny, the nature of evil, and sacrifice. It also touches on topics such as parental substance abuse and child abuse. It has slightly more grown up themes than the first book, building on the personal teen issues of growing up to larger issues of responsibility to the people around you. I normally don't read nonfiction, but I was looking for an audiobook and picked up this title. I remembered it from a few years back. It was extremely interesting to listen to. It covered topics such as first impressions, when they work and when fail, and how to get your subconscious to work for you. It was very thought provoking and gave me lots of conversation topics that my normal fiction reads do not. I especially enjoyed the section on Warren G. When Crystal recommended this book to me, I was skeptical. I mean, a dystopian society where teenagers are forced to battle to the death? Sounds like a rip-roaring good time. However, my doubts were soon put to rest once I got sucked into the novel. Collins explores the themes of a society suffering from war and violence as well as the dehumanizing effects of reality TV. The story is thrilling, heart-pounding, and engaging. Even though you make assumptions about the ending, you continue to doubt whether things will end for good or for bad. This book was written 50 years ago, but it is still a great read for someone who likes historical fiction. Janice Holt Giles remains true to the actual historical events, but her writing style keeps the story from being too dry. Limiting description and using a lot of dialog (in historical dialect), she keeps the story moving and interesting. Throwing in a love triangle that alternates with political intregue, she keeps the reader balanced between fictional emotion and historical fact.
