Pollan really waxes philosophical at times, you can tell he put a lot of thought into his words and ideas. From the apple to the tulip and marijuana to potatoes, he examines man's relationship with his food, and the food's relationship with man. I thought this was a series of interesting personal observations on the part of sloane crosley, but my mom thought she was just "a bit of a bitch."
