Wow. That's one heck of a book. Short. So elegant and piercing. To be read in one sitting for sure.

What is it about the story that's so great? Because it's so great but I don't know why.

Whoa. Truly nutso in so many ways. But really, what Pynchon says is true. Ain't no bullcrap here. Just pure hallucination. But more of the honest kind than the "whoa, far out man" kind. It's like the gritty, hyper-real (non-baudrillard) mystery novels that have become so popular recently but instead of distilling anger, child molestation and waterways in Boston, it's like the things that the psyche fears the most. Including being locked in a pantry with lots of potatoes.

Another book from Laird is a real treat. This one seems especially so. I like good old-fashioned ghost stories, but new-fashioned ones are good too. Which is what this is. And it hurtles with those long sentences, really long sentences, into a warped Catalonian street with more than just living statues, but stories that could possibly go forever. But they all only get one sentence. That is sad. But pretty sweet too. Like lychee sweet, more than peach sweet.
