This was a poor end to the series. The writing for the Twilight series was mostly dreck...chick-lit style construction. I generally felt that the series needed the red pen of a really good editor. However, the storyline is what saved it, what made it better. The pregnancy and birth that is the setting of Breaking Dawn just ruins it for me. First, it over-romanticizes having children, and much time on the page is spent waxing and waning over the transformations of pregnancy and motherhood. Second, I felt like Bella's transformation to a vampiress should have been marked by a Harry Potter-like wonderment. We should have gotten to revel in her new world. Instead, that got shoved aside for the baby's storyline. It felt like too much in one book, what with the vampire alliance, the vampire child, the Jacob storylines, Bella's new vampirehood, etc. We never even get to really enjoy the marriage of Edward and Bella.
The only part of the story that fascinated me was Jacob's pairing with Bella's daughter. That, at least, was very original and compelling. (less)
