Simply put, this is the story of someone (man or woman, who knows? My guess is man, but it doesn't really matter) who is in love with a woman named Louise. They have to overcome a series of hurdles, such as their relationships with other people and a terminal disease.

It's a very quick read - I blazed through this in about 2-3 days of reading on the subway. A quick reader could probably finish in one day of dedicated reading. However, despite how easy it is to read, it's also a little overwhelming. The language is so pretty, so flowery, so ornate, that I found myself tiring of it rather quickly. I love beautiful language as much as the next person, but this was just too much, too over the top. I wanted medium, she gave me well done. Part of the reason I read it so fast is because I just wanted it to be over with. Not because I didn't like it, just because it was way too flowery, too sweet.

I could've done with the first 110 or whatever pages as the entire novel and been completely satisfied. I ran out of interest about 3/4 the way through when she started describing each part of the woman's body with 2 page passages. I know that's supposed to be the heart of the novel, but after a couple sections, it was just so damn boring - I started skimming them. It got more interesting when the story picked up again, but I saw little point to that addition to the plot.

If you like flowery, delicate writing, you'll eat this up, but in terms of an overall solid body of work, The Passion is better.(less)

I read Winterson's The Passion for an English class and really enjoyed her style, and since others in the class said they loved this book, I figured I'd give it a shot.
------------------------------------
Winterson always has an unusual (?) way of looking things--very common or ordinary situations and thoughts--and describes them in ways most people wouldn't think about, like describing a not-so-perfect relationship as a flower bud with a worm in it that you fuss over and hope for sunshine to dry it out and make things better (28).

"Love demands expression. It will not stay still, stay silent, be good, be modest, be seen and not heard" (9)

cliches of love = a familiar, comfy armchair (10, 26)

"Wallowing is sex for depressives." (26)

"passion is for holidays, not homecoming" (27)

"You never give away your heart; you lend it from time to time." (38) (like The Passion)

"If in doubt eat. I can understand why for some people the best social worker is the fridge." (39)

"My usual confessional is a straight Macallan but not before 5 o'clock. Perhaps that's why I try and have my crises in the evening." (39)

"I felt like a bandit who who hides a gun in his mouth. If I spoke I would reveal everything." (40).

outside late at night - "There was an urban pleasure in knowing that I was the only one breathing the air. The relentless in-out-in-out of millions of lungs depresses me. There are too many of us on this planet and it's beginning to show." (42)

"I don't feel wise. Why is it that human beings are allowed to grow up without the necessary apparatus to make sound ethical decisions?" (43)

narrator talking about dating a dentist - "I came to you for a crown and you offered me a kingdom" (47)

comparing a woman to a volcano and the narrator to Pompeii (49)

someone's who's heart-broken and has no courage - "an enlarged heart and no guts" (49)

"I felt like a thief with a bagful of stolen glances." (49)

"It's odd being in someone else's room when they're not there. Especially when you love them. Every object carries a different significance. ... The room becomes a code that you have only a few minutes to crack." (49-50)

"In the heat of her hands I thought, This is the campfire that mocks the sun." (51)

"Things don't change, they're not like the seasons moving on a diurnal round. People change things." (56)

"the power of memory is such that it can lift reality for a time" (61)

"Jacqueline...had never been wanted, simply she had had roughly the right shape to fit for a while." (61)

"She was a Roman Cardinal, chaste, but for the perfect choirboy." (67)

"It was necessary to engage her whole person. Her mind, her heart, her soul and her body could only be present as two sets of twins. She would not be divided from herself." (68)

"Is happiness always a compromise?" (74)

"With her I forgot about feeling and wallowed in contentment. Contentment is a feeling you say? Are you sure it's not an absence of feeling? I liken it to that particular numbness one gets after a visit to the dentist. Not in pain nor out of it, slightly drugged. Contentment is the positive side of resignation." (76)

"Adultery is as much about disillusionment as it is about sex." (78)

"If I commit adultery in my heart then I have lost you a little. The bright vision of your face will blur. I may not notice this once or twice, I may pride myself on having enjoyed those fleshy excursions in the most cerebral way. Yet I will have blunted that sharp flint that sparks between us, our desire for one another above all else." (79)

"Destiny is a worrying concept. I don't want to be fated, I want to choose." (91)

"My mind took me up tortuous staircases that opened into doors that opened into nothing." (92)

"the small hours [of the night:], so called because the heart shrivels up to the size of a pea and there is no hope left in it." (95)

"Unhappiness is selfish, grief is selfish. For whom are the tears?" (103)

"What is the point of movement when movement indicates life and life indicates hope?" (107-108)

"Fighting words but the fight's gone out of me." (108)

"Sleeping beside Louise had been a pleasure that often led to sex but which was separate from it." (110)

"Do they really think, those quiet concerned counsellors, that two feet of linen-bound stuffing will assuage a broken heart? I don't want a pillow I want your moving breathing flesh. ... The bed is empty. I'm in it but the bed is empty." (110-111)

descriptive imagery section about body (113-139)

"To lose someone you love is to alter your life for ever. You don't get over it because 'it' is the person you loved. The pain stops, there are new people, but the gap never closes. How could it? The particularness of someone who mattered enough to grieve over is not made anodyne by death. This hole in my heart is in the shape of you and no-one else can fit it. Why would I want them to?" (155)

"Even death after long illness is without warning. The moment you had prepared for so carefully took you by storm." (155)

"There was only the weight of wrong-doing. I had failed Louise and it was too late." (157)

"'The trouble with you,' she said... 'is that you want to live in a novel.'
'Rubbish. I never read novels.'" (160)

"'You don't run out on the woman you love. Especially you don't when you think it's for her own good.'" (160)

"The sky was blue as in blue-eyed boy, not a wink of cloud, steady gaze, what a smile. A pre-war sky. Before the first world war there were days and days like this; long English meadows, ... innocence and blue sky. Farm workers pitching the hay, women in waist aprons carrying pitchers of lemonade. Summers were hot, winters were snowy. It's a pretty story." (161)

"Now here am I making up my own memories of good times." (161)

"Why are human beings so contradictory?" (163)

"There was a new table with curved legs, a hideous thing in maple inlaid with brass strips. No doubt it had come from the kind of shop where there are no prices but it had its price painted all over it." (170)

"I've always had a wild streak, it starts with a throbbing in the temple and then a slide into craziness I can recognise but can't control. Can control. Had controlled for years until I met Louise. She opened up the dark places as well as the light. That's the risk you take." (174)

"Six bearers in long coats and white scarves carried the body to the grave. To call it a grave at this stage would be to dignify it. In a garden it might be a trench for a new asparagus bed. Fill it with manure and plant it out. An optimistic hole. But this is not an asparagus bed, it is the last resting place of the deceased." (176)

"What do the dead do at night? Do they come forth grinning at the wind whistling through their ribs. What do they care that it is cold?" (179)

"I had scrupulously avoided our old haunts -- that's the advice in grief books -- until today. Until today I had hoped to find you or more modestly to find out how you are. I never thought to be Cassandra plagued by dreams. I am plagued." (179)

"The worm of doubt has long since found a home in my intestines. I no longer know what to trust or what is right. ... The worms that will eat you are first eating me." (179-180)

"I don't want to be reminded of you, I want you." (180)

"the terrible untruth at the beginning of Anna Karenina... 'All happy families are alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own particular way.' In fact it's the other way around. Happiness is a specific. Misery is a generalisation. People usually know exactly why they are happy. They very rarely know why they are miserable." (183)

"Misery pulls away the brackets of life leaving you to free fall. Whatever your private hell, you'll find millions like it in Misery. This is the town where everyone's nightmares come true." (183)

"The miserable millions moving in time without hope. There are no clocks in Misery, just an endless ticking." (183)

"What then kills love? Only this: Neglect." (186)

If This Book Weren't Famous, Most People Wouldn't Like It

And with good reason. If I were Hemingway's English teacher (or anyone's any kind of teacher) I'd say, "This reads more like a screenplay than a novel. Where are your descriptions, where is the emotion??"
And he would say something like, "The lack of complex descriptions helps focus on the complexities and emptiness of the characters' lives, and the emotion is there, it's only just beneath the surface, struggling to be free!"
And I'd say, "OK, I'll move ya from a C to C+."

Basically The Sun Also Rises shows that Hemingway liked bullfights a lot more than most of the people reading his books, and that he was vain but also hated himself. While the characters are wittily funny from time to time, the whole thing doesn't hold a candle to, I don't know, Seinfeld. Without being told, "Ah yes, this is about the true character of America!" you'd think it was just a drab romance novel with more subtleties than most.
Speaking of, how was this about America? It was more about America's elite. Most Americans in 1926 weren't hanging out in France and Spain, moaning about their lives. They were hanging out in America, trying to make it. You know, without dying. Pretentious, with poor descriptions and transparent characters (I can give a character a subtle injury too and have it pain him, does that make me amazing?), The Sun Also Rises is one of the most overrated books I've ever read. It always has been, and always will be, a book loved by that very same crowd: the literary elite. And, you know, people they tell to like it. I'd rather read a 1926 newspaper.(less)

  		Hi, Moxysox.

While "Batik" sounds familiar, I can't recall what this means. I even pulled out my old class notes looking for something! Sorry I let you down :/

It is definitely a "mass of print," as you said. Erratic concentration could be a good or bad thing, though -- it's definitely more daunting if you don't feel like you can concentrate; however, the sentences/paragraphs are so non-linear that practically each sentence starts a new topic, so no concentration is required! Read one sentence, and you're done with that topic and it's time to move on (until that topic is referred to again later, but not in such a way that it's *too* detrimental if you don't remember reading it)! :)
